Ford Celebrates Mustang Cobra Jet Anniversary with Fastest Model Yet

Think back to the classic muscle car era. In 1968, the Ford Mustang had shot to the top of pony car sales but there was still something special in the works. The 1968 Mustang received a monstrous addition to the family with the Cobra Jet. Equipped with a 428 cubic-inch V8, the Cobra Jet tore up the dragstrip, which is exactly the intention from the factory. It’s a car that goes down in history.

Fast forward fifty years, and the Cobra Jet is making a return. For its fiftieth anniversary, Ford is releasing the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet, and it’s the fastest Ford model to date.

What Is the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet All About?

You won’t get the full story just yet. But what’s known about the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet is enough to get your engine revving hard.

This very special 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet houses a supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8 under the hood. Built to be dragstrip ready off the showroom floor, it’s targeted to be the most powerful and quickest Ford Mustang built by the factory. A Ford 9-inch solid rear axle manufactured by Strange Engineering puts the power to the rear tires.

This isn’t your standard 2018 Mustang by any means. Outside or in, it won’t be equipped the same. You’ll have two choices when it comes to exterior colors: either Race Red or Oxford White, and with a 50th Anniversary graphics package and anniversary badging.

It’s race-ready but it won’t be street ready. In its limited production of 68 units, none will have VIN numbers. That means they will be restricted to the track. Its track components are many including an NHRA-certified roll cage and Racetech FIA seats. As well, Weld Racing wheels with 50th anniversary badging are unique to the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet.

Handling is to be like no other Mustang with coil-over suspension designed specifically for drag racing applications. The Mustang Cobra Jet hooks up, propelling it down the drag strip like a rocket ship on wheels.

Wondering just how fast the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet will be? Hold on tight. The turnkey racer is estimated to run the quarter-mile in the mid-eight-second range and at a speed of 150 miles per hour.
