Anyone shopping for a large family vehicle with all the practicality of a minivan, but without it actually being a minivan, really should take a close look at the 2016 Ford Flex. The Flex is a large, three-row, seven-seat crossover with incredible capability and flexibility, but it's also extremely good to drive, bursting with standard and available features and equipment and is an excellent performer.
In standard form, the 2016 Ford Flex is a front-wheel vehicle powered by a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine mated to a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with shifter button activation. This combination delivers 287 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque, and also offers an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 23 mpg.* There is another engine available in the Flex lineup, but it's only available as an upgrade to the top Platinum trim. This optional powerplant is a 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost unit and it really is worth considering as it puts a very impressive 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque at your disposal. Choosing the EcoBoost option also gets a transmission upgrade to steering-wheel paddle shifters for a more manual control mode. All-wheel drive is available, but only with SEL and Platinum trims. However, to upgrade to the EcoBoost engine in Platinum trim means selecting Equipment Group 302A, which also adds all-wheel drive as part of the package.
The exterior styling of the 2016 Flex is an area which can't be ignored, and anyone tired of the current crop of relatively homogenous crossover designs can't fail to be impressed by the unique look of the Ford. The unashamedly rectangular body will stand out in even the largest and most crowded parking lot, but it's also an exercise in substance over style for the sake of it. Resisting the temptation to add a sleek, sloping rear roofline means passengers in the rear of the Flex are not starved of headroom, which means third-row seats are suitable for adults and are not just there for the children.
There are three trim levels of 2016 Ford Flex, which are SE, SEL and Platinum, with even the SE offering an impressive list of standard features and equipment. As well as all the usual family-friendly features a vehicle like this has to have to be competitive, the Flex goes much further with class-exclusive active park assist. As well as making parallel parking easier by helping you find a space, it's actually capable of steering the Flex into position as the driver controls the gear shifter, brake and accelerator pedals.
